Reverb

Just wondering what does everyone uses for reverb in their op1 set up?

I just spent the morning searching through all posts containing “reverb” and didn’t find much. The spring reverb has quite an unusual sound, it can make a “room” type reverb but nothing big like a hall.

I’ve heard big reverb effects on OP-1 beat/jam tracks so I’m just wondering what people use to make it. (I am new to op1, maybe there’s a patch that people use?)

@clay1st the reverb on a (mono) track and the one you can use on the mixer (stereo) are totally different in sounding (same for Phone effect) : the stereo adds a lot to the reverb, it can get deeper with this one.

I’m fairly new to the OP-1 as well but I’m a total reverb & delay junkie. The spring reverb on the OP-1 is pretty noisy and can be used as a pretty wacky effect on individual synths/drums/tracks but can be used subtly too.

Use it as the master effect (which is stereo) can create a fuller sound. It doesn’t do hall or plate-style sounds but it can get somewhere in the ballpark. Firstly, turn the blue encoder all the way clock-wise so that the spring becomes totally blue - this will soften the sound. I normally change the amount of stings (i.e. the length of the reverb) down quite a lot - this is done by moving the green encoder counter-clockwise. The orange is the size of the reverb and the white seems to affect the trails (long to shorter). Both the white & the orange are just done to taste really, it depends on a track by track basis and what is join on with the mix. My preference normally has the spring graphic looking more like a wavy line than a spring by the time I’m done with it.

As a final tip, using really short delays (kind of like a slap-back delay) on certain tracks when combined with the reverb on the master helps to fill out the stereo space in certainly places and can add an extra snap to certain drum sounds.

I hope some of this is useful as a start point, like with most things its a little trial/error and down to personal tastes.

I rather like CWO as Master FX using lower settings, gives it sort of pulsing/swelling sort of ambience not unlike the Monomachine’s reverb.

Spring is useful, but you have to watch the Blue knob to make it work. But you can’t really escape its metallic nature because of what it is.

If you have an iDevice/interface, AUFX: Space sounds amazing for $4 or $500. Add AUFX: Dub w/ Audiobus and you will have incredibly massive, lush, swirling sound spaces.

I’m still torn between getting this or a Big Sky. I’ve only got five reverb pedals so I clearly need another

AAHAHAH @wolflegjon why choose ??

Eventide Space is definitely the best, but I never tried the Big Sky

I never had the chance to try the Space but I bought a Big Sky and it's simply amazing. I'm sure though that the Space is also a fantastic reverb box. There's this online debate between the 'spaceist' and 'bigkskyist' cults but I don't think either one of them is right or wrong. Everyone's right so it' would be just fair if everyone owned both units. :)

Owned an eventide h9 (has space algorithms) and ended up trading it for (my 2nd) bigsky. Just prefer the tones out of that. But both are excellent.

Of course you’re right @jooga1972, it’s just a matter of taste…

One thing I like in the Space are the “Gravity” and “Mangled” algos that add some dirt to the sound, they are really well crafted and sound well both on guitar and synth.
Are there such reverb on Big Sky, or are they all clean ?

Haha, I like your thinking! :) I need to try them both (and the H9) out, all of them sound great in demos.

Big Sky's Magneto or Nonlinear algos may produce the same type of effect as those on the Space you mentioned, however these are all very clean-sounding. No dirt there, just amazing clarity. Love it a lot, though I like dirty stuff too... so this is just one more reason to grab a Space as well at some point in the future... ;) ... I'd never want to part with the Big Sky though... so the Space and the Big Sky need an AND inbetween them and not an OR. :)

@wolflegjon H9 is the same as Space, if you fill it with Space algorithm.

Less tweaking knobs, though :frowning:
Have you tried to chain all your reverb in serie ?
ZZ Top use to do this with fuzz pedals

@jooga1972 That’s what I thought.
I once tried the Strymon Timeline with some distortion, and I was not very pleased by the result…
But maybe that was just me not tweaking the right knobs.
I liked the Timefactor better. Hence the Space vs. Big Sky
I like when a pedal can deal with or do dirt !

@LyingDalai Thanks for pointing that out re: H9, I hadn’t twigged that yet!

All my reverbs are spring (one is a proper tank). I have chained a few together before, it can be difficult to control but there are some really cool artefacts which happen as a result.

I agree with ZZ top - always stack fuzz, especially on guitars!

Thanks for all these posts guys. Eventide Space and Strymon big sky seem like popular reverb units, I like making ambient sounds so maybe when I get some more cash I’ll think of these guys.

@KrisM Thanks for the suggestion of AUFX:Space, I have a mini-ipad so this could work really well for me. I might get the whole AUFX app. Do people use any other effects apps? perhaps with more ability to stack different effects?

I wonder if you could use the op-1 output–>reverb pedal/app–>op1 mic-input in order to record the sound with reverb onto the OP-1 tape recorder. I’ll give it a go later

I like tonestack for stacking effects. I also like auria’s effects which can be chained and stacked and sent out to other apps then back in.

Now that you’ve almost made your choice, may I drop this pointer to un-help you ?

I think you will get horrific feedback @clay1st - I tried that with a mini kp2 once. I had to record into the kp2 for the fx I wanted then record back into the OP-1.

There’s a post around here somewhere about how to do it right, either @darenager or @docshermaticks made it iirc

I wonder if you could record onto a muted Tape track (no monitoring FX through OP-1 though and must stay in Tape mode-Dont hit Synth mode) when trying external FX loops.

line 6 M5 got some cool Reverbs! and other Effects aswell…its really Good.
