RIP OP-Z Hype: Long Live OP-Z!

@mcpepe said:
I was very excited to get the OP-Z from the last year. But there have been a few delays that really have depressed me a little bit. I was ready to pay for it 600-700€,… whatever…But I have changed my mind when I read a little bit more about the Synthstrom Deluge, and specially their inminet 2.0 firmware update.
I have finally bought the Deluge (2 days ago I received it) and it really is a wonderful machine. It’s really a good alternative to the OP-Z:
-It’s really small. Of course it’s not at small as the OP-Z, but it is very portable. It works with batteries and it also have a built-in mic and a speaker.
-The sequencer is very capable, with independent track lenghts, conditional trigs, parameter locks,…and even a new arranger (ala Ableton Live) that is coming in the new 2.0 firmware this month.
-Various synthesis methods: substractive synth, FM synth, sampler,…
-Infinite everything: songs, tracks, tracks lenght, presets, samples…
-It can sequence MIDI and CV without any expansions…
-What I miss is the video options the OP-Z have.

The more I know about the Deluge, more happy I am. It is really a very capable, portable little machine

The deluge is sick…ive had it it since dec…one of the best machines i ever owned…doesnt get nearly enough pub

Go to their website https://synthstrom.com/product/deluge/
I live in the US but they are definitely shipping to Europe. Their customer service is great if you have any questions.

When you say video options do you mean unity integration?

Yes. I think the Unity integration, photo app and even lights features will be very fun to use.

You can only order the Deluge directly from Synthstrom, in New Zealand. The shipping is quick

Dmx light sequencing would be super cool but you can pull off unity integration as long as you have midi sequencing. There’s no secret ingredient to the 3d visual aspects of the Op-z it’s just midi over Bluetooth. If you change the format you compile to in unity you should be able to run your visuals on your desktop and feed directly into a vj program via spout/syphon.

GitHub - teenageengineering/videolab check out the software package for unity it all revolves around midi control. You could easily use a Deluge with it.

Just remember to consider your country’s import tax.

Dunno anything about graphics coding etc but hopefully this isn’t gonna cause TE problems?

I don’t think so, since the OP-Z companion app is going to use Apple’s Metal API.

Cool, thought it might have been another case of Apple making life way harder than it needs to be

…thought that I already use my iPad for other apps…

OMG! had not thought of that; one of the main reasons hardware > software is the constant distraction of other apps and the OS nagging about updates, unintentional notifications of things your kids installed and more nightmares.

What about your fancy live show with new hip visuals from your OP-Z is interrupted by whatsapp message notifications because you forgot to set it to “do not disturb”? What about you mistakenly click “update now” and you (and your audience) have to wait for it to finish, given that it isn’t bricked or that your software still runs?

Man, such a bad decision to use an i-device for a screen. It’s the competition. If I need an iThing, I could get all the functionality cheaper with apps and still have the same pains as with OP-Z + BYOD…

(or has this been said before, idk…)

te will be at brooklyn synth expo this weekend. maybe some news? (would be appropriate since they’re soft launching at nyc moma next month)

long live opz hype!

It seems to me the deluge has all features and more than opz. I don’t care about the video sequence stuff. I don’t think I can wait for opz now that the deluge is out and full of exciting features.

yeah the deluge is on another level…the synthesis on it is crazy… sounds really good too…u can get really creative with its synth patches using the VA engine and using samples as wave tables etc…but i can see as portable as the deluge is the op-z is more portable with more battery life being its own little beast…and most of being really fun to use. I think they are gonna be different animals even though they both seem like they are based as synth/ sequencers/all in one grooveboxes.

odd statement since the second half of it admits that the deluge doesn’t have the unity/dmx sequencing of the opz, nor is it nearly as portable, but ok

@drybones what i meant was when it comes to features, except for dmx, the deluge seems to have pretty much all the opz have and maybe even more. my english can be confusing, sorry.

If the Deluge has midi sequencing then it can sequence unity. No dmx tho

The dmx will be and add-on component though right?
