Sofa-ready, Self-contained Instruments: A Community List

Ever since I got the OP-1 a few weeks ago, I’ve become completely partial to instruments of similar Sofa-, camel riding-, jet setting-readiness. To be able to hold an instrument, especially an instrument type usually large and weighty, arouses a youthful intimacy and thrill. And to be able to play an instrument away from the proper place—the desk, the chair, the stool—is joyously liberating.

Since I imagine others here are also now stricken with this fondness, thanks to Teenage Engineering, I thought maybe it would be useful to have a list of portable electronic instruments that are completely self-contained: small, battery-powered and with a built-in speaker. And preferably still in production.

TE’s Pocket Operators
Korg Volcas
Korg Monotrons
Korg Monotribe (seems quietly discontinued)
Korg KR Mini
Little Bits & Korg Synth Kit
Critter & Guitari Pocket Piano
Critter & Guitari Septavox
Gakken SX 150 Self Assembly Synthesizer
Stylophone S2
Nintendo 3DS (the Korg synthesizer apps it look really capable)

Roland MC 202. Not in production and doesn’t have a speaker but is battery powered.

iPad/iPhone

Korg KaOscillator .
Casio PT-30

SP202/404/SX

MPC 500

microgranny. all the bastl stuff actually

gameboy

yamaha qy70 / qy100

also, if u get a usb battery for laptops (anker, ravpower, tekkeon, etc), u can make lots of stuff battery powered and portable that isn’t supposed to be.

electribes, lots of different synths, elektron stuff. nearly anything w/ a DC jack wall wart type supply.
i still use my usb battery for stuff that can take like AA’s, cuz i get way longer battery life, and i’m not just eating batteries and chucking them.

Thanks for the replies so far. Just to reiterate my preference for this list is that they are “small, battery-powered and with a built-in speaker. And preferably still in production.”

oh shoot. lol i didn’t read the whole thing. i am high my bad

Just did a quick Amazon search of “usb battery.” They look great, all quite compact.

Don’t ever apologize for being high.

@libertinelush yea the battery life is phenomenal too. easily gets like 8-12 hours maybe more. i’ve never actually drained the whole thing before. i have a ravpower that does 9v and 12v, and w/ a reverse polarity connector from my 1spot, i can power positive or negative polarity devices. and then my tekkeon powerall can do anywhere from 3v - 14v. i used the tekkeon mainly w/ my octatrack last summer. both were well worth the investment.

haha na never. just for being that dude who doesn’t read the whole post and then responds some not so relevant response.

Have you tried to use the Korg/Little Bits thing in your lap? It’s an exercise in irritation as it tries to fall apart more or less constantly

^ So true and so sad - even with the mounting boards still very eager to separate, in every other way though love the Littlebits.

Arpeggio

"The first dedicated arpeggiator and sequencer in one portable device. A simple instrument for composing, saving, and performing melodies… Internal 2-oscillator virtual analog monophonic synth."

^it has CV too. Ive been looking for a inexpensive CV control machine. maybe a minibrute microbrute.

Arpeggio is also 3D printed apparently… Interesting to see that.

Please don’t tease with pictures and no link :stuck_out_tongue:
