What is your OP-Z battery usage?

does someone knows if the op z charges when connected to a sound module through USB while using midi usb out at the same time ?

it could be more critical if u are on the road/out there in the world
and donā€™t always have access to a power plug.
fast charging or not, those extra hours could be huge.

but i think the main thing is the disconnect between the expectations vs the reality

is this how its supposed to be and they just overshot the expectations?
or is it not how its supposed to be & is there something going on that could be fixed?

Soon itā€™s gonna say ā€œā€¦so after crossing the road you hopefully recorded a pattern, because your battery will be empty before you slide your OP-Z back into your overpriced leatercaseā€

Still looking forward to mineā€¦TE hope your are not mad at me

Now it is official:

ā€œ6 hour battery lifeā€

Depends on what itā€™s connected to. If connected to something that sends power over USB it will. Nothing I own personally (besides computer) does that though.

interesting on the opz preview page, the 4 times around the atlantic has been removed
and the 2 year standby time has been changed to 1 yearā€¦

this had to happen in the last couple days as that was the last time i checked it

the wayback machine has the text about flying across the atlantic 4 times on October 1st. - https://web.archive.org/web/20181001182128/https:/www.teenageengineering.com/products/op-z

the text about glow in the dark paint is still up there. https://www.teenageengineering.com/products/op-z

I forgot the wording on that actually implies 8 transatlantic flights, so around 48 hours total. Really weird thing to say when the actual duration is like 4 hours.

Yeah, but TE only cross the atlantic in supersonic flights !

A smart sleep setting might help; sometimes Iā€™m not playing and just looking up info or reading the manual and the zā€™s just sitting there losing powerā€¦ would be nice if it could hibernate during inactivity, maybe easy to implement in software.

@jazzmess The Blackbird SR-71 took 2 hours to do that, so it would only account for one and a half round trips

@sketcherazzi Unless TE is using an amateur programmer that should already be thereā€¦

you guys think that TE could make a larger capacity battery of the same size or just sell a different one that lasts longer but is more expensive?

@oxxi Unlikely, unless battery technology evolves to allow higher energy density per volume or they use additional space reserved for the module (but that is insane and is not going to happen). You could allways use an USB-C power bank, I have one with 30000mAh for my Switch, that would give you 24 hours autonomy :stuck_out_tongue:

By the way, this is just a consequence of a design decision to do the OP-Z that small, so I guess people should embrace it along with the lack of a screen and the small buttons. I still want one!

Or itā€™s a consequence of adding a module section, seems like there could have fit a battery twice, or three times as big in there. :#

@punji Good point on the power bank. I really donā€™t mind the current battery life anymore for how amazing this device is and one could also just buy an extra spare battery from TE.

@j0nny I can power my Op-1 and send midi to mfb dominion club via usb. I assume the op-z will work the same way Iā€™ll test it this weekend.
That being said Iā€™m bummed that op-z is only 6 hours especially with that tiny included cable. Iā€™m glad I have an og oplab as alternative power station.

If you connect the op-z via CCK to the iPad or iPhone I think it will draw power - meaning you can share the available power between both; extends time for the op-z but shortens time on the iPad. Might get you across the Atlantic though!

Itā€™s kinda funny you can Bluetooth the graphics but then have to CCK adapter cable to draw power due to its short battery life. :stuck_out_tongue:

yes thatā€™s the idea ! an op - Z sending midi to a bigger analog something that draws power anyway.

that being said, how does TE announce 6 hours when users on the forum say 3 - 4 hours?
(perharps that would be 6 hours if you play it without actually touching/modifying any parameter ?)
(canā€™t TE program an option to draw less power firmware - wise by using less contrast with the LED or something ?)

Ya itā€™s 6 hour standby lol
Think Iā€™ve been getting close to 6 but Iā€™ve only had op-z since Wednesday.

Not really surprising considering the price compared to the flagship device, op-1. Also no more text about glow in the dark paint. Only disappointing because they teased both specs and I gout caught up in the hype. I really wish they launched this thing like they did with the pocket operators. Donā€™t say a word until itā€™s ready!
