I'm going to design a keyboard replacement for OP-1

Perfect. I think just the sides and thickness for now and good pictures would work! I ordered a broken one to take detailed measurements but until it arrives that would be great! Thanks!!

Thanks formatk! That helps! I ordered a broken one off reverb that I can use to completely disassemble. Does anyone here know if v1 and v2 can use the same keyboard? Are they interchangeable?

@formatk could you add the measurement of the long side too? Thanks!!

Looking at the internals of the op-1 field I wonder if the field keyboard could also be used as a suitable replacement for the of op-1 as well (with modifications). Unfortunately it is not in ifixit otherwise I would give that a go too. Internals of op-1 field: Output/headphone jack no longer working

I found a broken keyboard and disassembled it completely to start the pcb design. If anyone has experience in that or has tips or suggestions please feel free to chime in.

Ive got an OP1 Rev 2 with sticky keys so this super super exciting! Thank you for doing this and for letting us follow along

Thanks! I still hope that @Ethanfide gets back to this but since I haven’t heard back I’m going forward.I’m currently in the process of designing the PCB in KiCAD. It’s a challenge since the layout is quite intricate and I only have a bit of experience in CAD design and none in PCB layout but I’m trying my best.
I reached out to some manufacturers but need a bom and schematic first to get reliable quotes. I think the most likely scenario would be to produce the flexpcb part only and keep the metal plate of the existing keyboard since the stem-holders of the keycaps are melted into the metal and would be difficult to reproduce. Here is a screenshot of the current state of things:

  • Acquired used keyboard to get a detailed schematic
  • Measured layout components
  • Recreating PCB in KiCAD (current step)

Again: If anyone has experience in flexpcb design or KiCAD or anything that relates to this task, please get in touch!

Quick Update:
Im still in the process of designing the pcb. It’s quite tedious. I hope to make some progress during the holidays and aim to have it finished end of January. I saw a post on Reddit where somebody posted keyboard issues with the opxy that look very similar to what the op1 does. I wonder if they changed this flawed design at all.

HEY hows it going! I just found this thread, I’am deeply grateful for your efforts, my OP started working like shit and in my attempt to see what’s going on, i broke one of the scissors keys, as many of you can relate, I am devastated, and even lost the last 2 years of work on my OP on a firmware update that ended on factory reset. At this point I’am desperate to try and make it work like its glory days and would NEVER ever sell it for parts, and getting a faulty one for parts isn’t an option where i live, and in my economy. so helping in any way to this project seems like my only hope on conserving what is today one of my most praised objects, cheers mate, hope to hear from you soon

Hey! Thanks for your message! I am still working on the pcb layout which is quite slow but I hope to be done around mid march hopefully. I only get a few hours at night and it’s a lot of measuring and I’m quite new to this kind of design software but I’m making progress! But your words are encouraging:)
