a MIDI update would be huge! the op-1’s limited MIDI capabilities are shockingly limited and huge wasted opportunity. The live performance capabilities of the OP-1 would be vastly improved if MIDI control messages could be used to control the following:
muting and unmuting different tape tracks
skipping to next loop sections (currently done by hitting left or right on the hardware while in tape mode)
I might be the only one, but it would be great if the black and white could be flipped on the sample waveform view page. the white background makes me eyes water even on low brightness settings. think it likely accelerates battery drain too, but not sure of that. anyway, more of a quality of life request there but I would be sooo grateful if they even gave us an option to swap them.
Probably it’s been mentioned before but I would love these functionalities:
-Being able to route sequencer to parameters would be kind of cool. I mean doesn’t have to be extensive. I’d be happy with having to choose between sequencing notes and parameters.
-At least one more LFO destination would be nice
-The ability to upload our own text/pics to the “quick guide”
-The option to save/load sequencer with patch and stay in sync with tempo when switching. OR at least the ability to save/load sequencer states
-Make page 3 (FX page) of multipurpose. Giving the ability to choose another synth to layer on top or an LFO array instead of the effect.
-The ability to choose which track is being rerecorded. OR at least that audio from existing tracks are not sampled.
For example: I want a part in a song to have 2 effects stacked. So I use the synth effect and global effect and use the ear icon to record whatever is being heard to a track. However if I need the rest of the music for propper accompaniment I will end up recording all of what is being heard.
-The ability to choose which tracks are being routed through the master effect and which bypass it.
-The ability to select a particular track to use as the sole modulation source in LFO.
Some of these are nice to have, some I can immagine to be complex or even too complex to implement but some of these are really easy to program in most cases and would open up a huuuuge potential for creativity and some you just require to make a decently polished track. I’m aware that some of these things can be done in a runabout way. But do give advice if you know a way to do it as is.
Just thought I’d drop this screenshot in case you missed this little drip of info from TE during the XY update livestream. Also eagerly awaiting an op-1f update!
Now that I finally pulled the trigger on the xy after using the field since it came out, it hurts me even more to feel how much a category filter in the preset browser helps my workflow. you cant tell me TE does not have the resources to implement that same pattern to the field. would be surprised if that would take them more than a day to be honest.
and now I go back to dream of having a favorites filter in the preset browser as well. :')
theyve replied something similar to a comment of mine on that video. And while I believe them: when? 2026? 27? the time of this device is now. frustration builds up which creates more expectation which puts more pressure on te to deliver a “banger” of an update which makes them push it further and further into the future.
I just hope they initially planned to split their update resources between the field and the xy but were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of bugs and general instability of the xy. now that they are (at least it seems like that) mostly sorted out, they find a healthy rythm between the two?
i hear you for sure. i would like to respectfully disagree though. i dont think they are playing games with their update plans, they are not pushing it into the future due to pressure. they are very small company with possibly one single main developer for their field products. i firmly believe they are doing the best they can.
they release a brand new product that was maybe their most crowd-requested item of all time: an op-z “field” i.e. the xy. we asked, they listened. sure there were bugs but the thing was an insane feat of product dev and engineering that 99% of the time slapped like hell, and they did a solid job fixing bugs as they came up.
the op-1 field is a complete product. it doesn’t need anything else. its an insanely powerful device as is and has been for years. but despite that fact, in a really cool way, they are (apparently) going back in to make it even better with an upcoming update (hopefully) soon. that is all bonus for us.
i really do say this gently because i honestly hear where you are coming from and can relate, but “frustration” only comes into the picture as a consumer when one either expects too much from a company or isn’t privy to all the difficult details that go in behind the scenes.
deep respect for everyone on this forum and just felt id share my honest thoughts in response.
Love my op-1f but I’d argue it is not “complete” - too many bugs with midi/clock/ble/sync in general. I would take stability updates over new features.
i’m my personal opinion, the op-1 original was complete and the op-1f was complete even before the recent ish updates. just my opinion.
the only bug im aware of with midi is clocking the internal tape reel with external gear. the issue there though is syncing midi to tape is not as straight forward as it seems. i’ve heard one of the devs comment on the tape simulation in how it ramps up and down causes midi clocking challenges. i hope they figure out a way but not essential imo. are there other bugs?
fwiw i have good luck syncing if tape starts from very very beginning. have you seen SonWu’s youtube video on this? looks like it works pretty darn well!
If you listen to the “midnight operations” video carefully, near the end Jonas also says something about shifting development focus to “another product … that hasn’t got an update in a while”.
That whole moment is awkward. It’s clear they really don’t want to make any promises about OP-1 updates. There is also an earlier moment where they are going through the questions in chat, and when someone asks about OP-1 updates, Tobias skips the question.
agree. what exactly needs an update? an update or new feature would be nice, but what isn’t working properly?
honestly, i think an update for the og-1 would be more kickass. the only things missing from the og-1 are a terminal type effect and the secret filter effect. i know its old as hell, but i still love my og-1
Here’s my guess and what I would tell anyone wanting to get an Op-1f…..
I don’t think we will ever see any significant updates again. It will probably be a spattering of little updates and fixes.
Anyone wanting an OP-1f should wait. My guess is that TE are considering a new op-1 (maybe op-2? Haha!) greater than any significant updates to the op-1f.
the problem is that the device has a complete stereo chain even internally. there is no algorithm currently that can find zero crossing on stereo. on the og-1 its def possible. but on the field since its a 100% stereo signal chain, i dont think its possible.
