The gearlust thread part deux: post your GAS

GAS Panic. I started pondering the possibilities the iConnectmidi4+ offers me, and I suddenly started thinking about stuff to sequence with the OT’s MIDI tracks…

Sonic Potions LXR
Shruthi
Monomachine, maybe?

I prefer to sequence the Monomachine with itself. Yeah you can plock CCs and have 3 LFOs on the OT’s MIDI sequencer, but the MnM sequencer is special in that you can independently trig the amp EG, filter, and LFO. If it had microtiming and polyrhythmic capability it’d be almost perfect.

Doesn’t the LXR have a pretty robust sequencer, too? I seem to recall it being able to have 8 ‘sub steps’ between each step (ie microtiming) though I can’t remember if it’s polyrhythmic. Isn’t it also possible to do generative patterns?

Ja, it makes more sense to just sync the LXR, because of the substeps, and you can change the beginning of each track, to get it polyrythmic, @rudedog from the forum programmed an update to be able to do that.

Thanks for the input guys… And you guys hit the nail on the head, I too was thinking about the sequencer issue with these machines. The OT is a powerful MIDI sequencer, so the LXR and the Monomachine both have some redundancy.

I ended up with the Monomachine. My local music store had one on sale, with 3 year warranty. Damn you, GAS.

At the moment, based on a couple of hours, my first impressions are … Well, I’ve been pretty amazed thinking about the capabilities the OT and MM have together. It seems like an excellent damn idea pairing a few Elektron machines, the sequencers and the effortless sync, etc. I also think that the A4 probably wouldn’t have been a better box for me, as I really enjoy the Monomachine’s sounds, out of the box (and I’ve been reading about people 5 years into the MM, still learning stuff). And the MM’s got more versatility - I’m always looking for ways to streamline the setup (something you really can’t tell by looking at my current gadget roster… I’ll sell some, I swear).

I will not say that my gear buying days are over, but seriously… Between the OT, MM and OP-1, I feel like it’s a damn fine day to be into making electronic music, I’ll say that much. My first physical device was a Waldorf MicroQ in 2001, and considering the price of that unit then, the power available to us now is ridiculous.

I’m gonna have a bit of GWS (gear withdrawal syndrome) when I’m off to college in like 5 days, and I can’t take all my gear. though I will be bringing my MPC1K, OP-1, and a couple other small pieces. (really wanna bring my minibrute, but it takes up a significant amount of space…)

@beefinator Holy shit, dude. You’re that young? Your stuff has a great, well-developed sound. Can’t wait to hear you in five or ten years!

Also: the OP-1 will be a wonderful creative prism when used in relative isolation. I think you will manage to craft some beautiful songs with it alone. The minibrute isn’t so big for true analogue power. I find good bass to be most lacking from the OP-1, so I’d personally be willing to give up the space for something like the minibrute. If it’s just going to be sitting around, you could just sell it and pick up the very capable volca bass from korg at a profit to keep some analogue in your rig.

still GAS’ing for a Roland SPx0x, and with an Octatrack, OP-1, and Blofeld I need another sampler like I need gonorrhea. My biggest concern is the lack of pitch shifting outside an fx and re-sample.

But it still calls to me…

@Lymtronics , yep, just turned 18 earlier this month.

And yeah, the all-in-one nature of the OP-1 was one of the reasons I got it. didn’t have anything that portable and singularly expansive in my setup.
Also, I have a volca bass  just love the MB…

sample the shit out of the MiniBrute before you go?

Or use this as an opportunity to buy an Oplab and a MicroBrute >.>

@KrisM yeah, I’ll sample a 10-second sample of every combination of every knob, moving each one at a time in 1° increments XD

but naw, if I’m gonna be using those sounds, I gotta have the knobs in front of me…

Chris Randall of Analog Industries and Audio Damage did that for a TR-909 sample set >.>

Well, not that anal on the knobs, but he sampled lots of knob positions that he felt were enough to notice the sound change.

I feel you, though, if Arturia hadn’t taken a month+ to get back to me on a support thing (regarding warranty honoring, half the screws were missing from the bottom plate), I’d very likely have kept my MicroBrute. Those Brutes sound wonderful, and I hope Arturia has something more up their sleeve.

well here’s my setup for now. Quite a powerful setup nonetheless.

MPC, OP-1, Volca Bass, Bluesky, custom lofi FUZZ, RNC, mixer

a great setup u got there. I would love to have an mpc1000.

I love a nice and compact setup @beefinator. I have an RNLA because I wanted a coloring box; FMR stuff is shockingly good for any price, imo.

so there’s going to be an iConnectAudio4, now >.>

Well played. If they squeezed the same amount of analog I/O into it that a MOTU Ultralite mkIII has, I’d buy one tomorrow. But they probably have a price point to meet, and this is still looking like an excellent one stop shop for a hybrid setup.

What studio cans are everyone using? I currently monitor with a pair of moded Grado Sr225i and I'm not too sure if they are the best for the situation especially when they lack a lot of bass. Any suggestions? (Looks required :)

I have Sennheiser HD 280 and an AKG K44 that I picked up because Guitar Center was selling it cheep.

I’ve been experiencing ear fatigue using my Skullcandy ear phones with the OP-1, Nintendo 3DS, and iPad (no, not all at once, lol) on the train - maybe its time I use one of my actual recording headphones.

Thanks for your input. I’ve been eyeing Akg’sk701 and 702, also ATH-50(x in white. If anyone has a used pair to sell please let me know.

@KrisM when does it come out?

For some reason I want this midi controller. It’s like 2014 and they still can’t figure out the perfect generic midi controller. It’s always missing something…or a huge workstation. This gets pretty close, although of course no faders…

Also, for some reason…I really want to try Reason 8. They finally added Recycle like I wanted, but by that time the GUI was wacked out. I think they’ve really done some nice refinements to get it back to the efficiency they left behind after Reason 4. Still haven’t been able to get an all ITB sound I like from Ableton, granted I have like no good VSTS (except for mastering).

Can we get a smaller version of this? http://www.vintagesynth.com/korg/microkontrol.php
